Ocean Data

The Sharing Ocean Data web portal aims at offering a diverse range of environmental data collected from various sources, including offshore installations and environmental monitoring systems.

Today, metaoceanographic data (referred to as metocean data) remains the main web portal content, however the ambition is to grow and diversify the ocean data available to include biodiversity information and seawater parameters for example.

All contributors will be able to make suggestions in regard to web portal content.

Available fields

The table below describes the fields available in the portal datasets. Column names match the pipeline CSV and the aggregated JSON used for the charts on this page.

BASINNamed geographical basin or offshore region.
CLIENTContributing organisation label in the dataset.
VESSEL_NAMEVessel or floating unit identifier.
VESSEL_TRIGAMShort vessel or asset code from the source system.
PART2Additional segment or grouping field supplied by the pipeline.
MEASURE TYPECategory of observation (e.g. WindSpeed, CurrentSpeed, WaveHeight).
METOCEAN_TAGTag used for filters and legends; in the preview data it follows MEASURE TYPE.
MEASURENumeric value of the observation.
METOCEAN_UNITPhysical unit of MEASURE (e.g. m/s).
MEASURE_TIMESTAMPObservation time (full ISO date-time or date-only, depending on the source row).
LATITUDELatitude in decimal degrees (WGS84).

Data management and security

Effective data management is crucial for the success of the initiative. Robust data governance policies are in place to ensure data quality, consistency, and integrity. These policies will cover data collection, storage, processing, and sharing, with a focus on maintaining high standards of accuracy and reliability. Note that the platform is compliant with corporate requirements and best practices for identity control, access management, security, privacy, and BI & BA governance, in addition to ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, COBIT 5 certification is in progress.

Security measures have been considered to protect data from unauthorized access and breaches. This includes encryption, access controls, and regular security audits. Compliance with industry standards and regulations will be a top priority, ensuring that the initiative meets all legal and ethical requirements.

At the Sharing Ocean Data Initiative, we prioritize transparency and collaboration. It is important to note that SBM Offshore and Dadosfera are not accountable for the quality of the data shared on our platform. All data provided is raw and comes directly from our partners, who have granted the necessary permissions to share this information in alignment with the initiative’s objectives. This approach ensures that a diverse range of environmental data is available to support scientific research, operational planning, and ocean conservation efforts.

Our partners play a crucial role in the success of the initiative by contributing valuable data collected from their operations and research activities. While we implement robust data governance and security measures to protect and manage the data, the responsibility for data quality lies with the original data providers. By fostering a collaborative environment, we aim to create a comprehensive and reliable data ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders, while maintaining the integrity and authenticity of the raw data shared on our platform.
